Swansea Ramblers Walk

Carreg Goch

A 7-mile Tuesday Walk

4th April 2023

Leader: Tim Gronow

Swansea Ramblers had a midweek walk in perfect weather. We travelled north to the Upper Swansea Valley where we walked above Dan yr Ogof.   Visibility was superb and after all the rain this month, a clear, sunny day was even more appreciated.   We met a number of other walkers also making the most of the sunshine on this pre-Easter week.

We visited Pwll-yr-Cawr, the largest sink hole in the Brecon Beacons National Park then continued to ascend into the remote open landscape.

Eventually we made our way to Carreg Goch where we paid our respects to the Canadian crew of the Wellington Bomber X.MF 509 which crashed here on 20th November 1944.   Today, with the weather conditions so good, the area is lovely and seems benign but in bad weather, these mountains are treacherous and have claimed many aircraft.

After lunch, we returned on the rocky bridleway, one of few human landmarks in a largely unspoilt wilderness.

Swansea Ramblers offer a range of walks for most abilities.

Try an easy walk of 2-3 hours or our longer strenuous mountain walks for the experienced walker.

Maybe you'd like to explore walking for the first time with a friendly group of people?
- Come with Swansea Ramblers!

If you'd like to try a Swansea walk then do come along and find out what the great outdoors is all about.

It won't cost you anything to come along and see if walking is for you.
You'll be very welcome to join us for three free walks.

If you enjoy walking with us and want to come on even more of our walks, just become a member.

When you join us for a Swansea Walk, ask us about the other walks and social events we do.
