Swansea Ramblers once more visited the Parc Slip Nature Reserve near Bridgend.
The area was once a busy industrial site where iron smelting took place as early as 1770s, around the same time as the iron foundries of Ironbridge in Shropshire.
Coal was also extracted under difficult conditions which eventually led to the 1892 disaster when many miners lost their lives in an underground explosion.
There are many paths through the reserve and today we only had time to follow some of these.
We stopped near the iron works for a coffee break then made our way to the 1892 memorial to those who died in the disaster.
Here we had lunch then headed back to the visitor Centre where we had coffee at the kiosk.
Another enjoyable day out with fellow walkers and one of our many walks that are free for the public to try out walking with Swansea Ramblers.
Swansea Ramblers offer a range of walks for most abilities.
Try an easy walk of 2-3 hours or our longer strenuous mountain walks for the experienced walker.
Maybe you'd like to explore walking for the first time with a friendly group of people?
