Swansea Ramblers walk all year around. Although Summer has the best weather, we also enjoy walking in the depths of winter when it's nice to get out and enjoy the fresh air.
For our walk to Rhosili, we had excellent sunny weather with a cool coastal breeze to stop us overheating. We started from Llangennith to avoid any 'sunflower' traffic which in previous years caused a long backlog of cars at Rhosili. There is now a charge to see the Sunflowers, so traffic was remarkably reduced!
We followed the lower path at the base of Rhosili Down, across the solifluction bench. Rosemarie told us some of the history of the area as we went along. In Rhosili, we visited the church where there is a plaque to Edgar Evens who died at the South Pole with Scott. We made our way to the Coastwatch lookout and stopped for lunch overlooking Worm's Head. On the way we met Zetta and Linda who had come to meet us.
After lunch we retraced our steps to the church then ascended Rhosili Down to the Trig Point. After a tea stop, we continued north along the Down to the WWII radar station. Rosemarie told us a bit about its history. We then had a very steep descent back to Hillend Caravan Park where we had started. We then went to The King's Head in the village for refreshments in the cool of the beer garden.
