Swansea Ramblers Walk
Swansea Ramblers visit Austria
Day 4: The Three Lakes, Mittersee, Blindsee and Weißensee
08th July 2018
Leader: Guides arranged with holiday company
Day four in Austria. The weather stayed dry and perfect for walking. We caught the bus to Biberwier Village and walked forestry tracks to Mittersee. This lake had an idyllic setting plus a mountain reflection in the water. We continued throught the forest to the next lake, Blindsee. Here some stayed to swim and have lunch while others decided to get the 200m climb over with and have refreshments at the Zugspitzblick hut with wonderful views over the lake and mountains.
When the others ascended from their swim, we crossed the very busy main road that carries traffic between Italy and Austria. We ascended another 200m into the forest. Picking wild strawberries on the way, we paused for a rest at the top then began the descent that eventually brought us to our third lake, Weißensee. We continued the walk through pasture and forest to reach the bus stop for the Biberwier Marienberg chair lift (that we used yesterday). We then caught the bus back to Ehrwald.
Swansea Ramblers offer a range of walks for most abilities from the long strenuous mountain walks for the experienced walker to the short, easy lowland walks where maybe you'd like to explore walking for the first time with a friendly group of people. If you'd like to try a walk then do come along and find out what all this Swansea Walking in the great outdoors is all about. It won't cost you anything to come along and see if walking is for you. If you get the bug and want to walk or stroll regularly then you can also become a member. Just ask us about the walks and social events we do when you join us for a Swansea Walk.
The clear morning gave fine views of Sonnenspitze from the hotel
Dry today as we left the hotel
An Austrian Twrch
Which kept watch on us as we headed for the bus stop
An attractive place to wait for the bus
Once in Biberwier, Cameron, our walk facilitator told us about the walk
And everyone listened intently
Cameron and Danni will be taking care of us today
And off we set
Not a friendly sign!
But a pretty village
Mountains in the distance
Walking past the ponds
Joining the Silberleithe
A mountain stream
A little toadlet emerging from the pond area
Rolls easily off the tongue, doesn't it?!
The first lake, Mittersee
A private log cabin on the lake
The second lake, Blindsee
Iron handrail to get around the path
Because it is narrow!
But beautiful here
Time for a swim and a spot of lunch
but some of us decided to climnb the 200m ascent before lunch!
And our reward was lunch at the Zugspitzblick Hut
With its incredible views
Then we had to cross the busy Austrian-Italian Highway!
For even more views of the lake
And another 200m climb
Reached the top. Downhill all the way now
Lots of Orchids around
Had to watch for bikes
Flowers bordered the third lake, Weißensee
Nearly at the end
Cameron shares a joke with Zetta
The Biberwier Marienberg chair lift passes those mountains
Shrines could be seen along the route
Back to the Marienberg Chair lift centre
And the bus stop to get back
Another hard but enjoyable walk
