Mynydd Myddfai, the Roman Camps
and the Usk Reservoir
13th March 2011
Leader: John France
Professor John France led another of his history walks, this time in the area near the Usk Reservoir where the Roman Army had an important base to control the area.
Swansea Ramblers offer a range of walks for most abilities.
Try an easy walk of 2-3 hours or our longer strenuous mountain walks for the experienced walker.
Maybe you'd like to explore walking for the first time with a friendly group of people?

We'll be walking near these woods soon
John leads the way
The Usk Reservoir
Crossing the reservoir
Heading for the forestry
Easy walking so far
Very sunny and clear but still pools of water about
John points to the Roman camp
Heading across the moor
Catch up on the high ground
Good views of Fan Brycheiniog, Fan Hir and Fan Foel
... and Pen y Fan
Heading for the best preserved Roman Camp in Britain
John gave us a talk then we retraced our steps
Starting to descend to the north
But downhill means back up at some point
Cwmclyd Farm and the climb ahead of us
Trees not yet in leaf
Long way up to go!
Tadpoles in a shallow pool
Long climb up
A Red Kite waiting to pick off a straggler
Views towards Fan Brycheiniog
Still some climbing to do
But the view is worth it
Steep valley ahead but we'll go left
Still wonderfully sunny
Rough ground to cross
We went the easier way than they did
But we all get good views
A Red Kite waits for the exhausted Rambler
Tim points out the summits
Tea break by the pond
Joining the Reservoir path
Getting colder but plenty of good views
Nice to walk back in the forest
Could be in American Wild West!
Not far now
Cars are over in the woods to the left
A buzzard tries to get in on the act
Back to the cars and no losses to the birds
Time for a pint in the Ancient Briton
