Walk Description

A Remembrance Day walk along the sea front to SA1, passing monuments to those who fought in past conflicts

From the Recreation Ground Car Park, cross Oystermouth Road at the traffic lights.
Turn left onto the tarmacadam path, heading for Swansea Cenotaph.
On the right is the memorial to Ben, a victim of a different conflict.
Continue to the Cenotaph and take time to pay respects to the fallen.
Further along is the memorial to the Boer War.
Walk the promenade to the Civic Centre.
Check in advance if there is a war exhibition in the foyer.
Otherwise there are a number of books about Swansea during the War in the libray.
Return to the promenade, turn left, then after the green buoy turn left to the Marina.
Turn right by the Meridian High Rise Tower onto the waterside path of the old South Dock.
At Ferrara Quay is a statue of JH Vivian.
The Ferrara Quay marks our new relationship with Italy, former enemies during World War Two.
Cross at the Pump House Bridge and turn right.
Pass by the Mannheim Sculpture that reflects our modern links with Germany.
Turn left into East Burrows Road, stopping at the Dylan Thomas Centre.
Go to the reception desk and see the plaque on the wall in remembrance of the Battle of the Somme.
Cross the Sail Bridge and turn left to the square in Heol y Brenin.
Here there is a more recent memorial to the Merchant Navy.
Continue to the main road into Swansea and turn left towards the City Centre.
Cross the road to the anti-aircraft memorial by the river.
(Extensive road works in 2011/12 may prevent a close visit to the gun).
Re-cross the road and follow the west bank of the River Tawe.
Turn right into Cambrian Place and head for the museum (Royal Institution of South Wales).
Go inside museum and ask to see the World War One bronze.
(Check in advance if it is on display).
An interesting Swansea at War long term exhibition is in a downstairs room
Turn left and follow the path between the Maritime Museum and LC2 (Leisure Centre).
Climb the LC2 amphitheatre steps and follow the high level path to the Civic Centre.
Join the promenade at the Civic Centre to re-trace your steps to the start.
