Walk Description

Bedford Country Park contains the historic industrial remains of the Bedford Ironworks, created in the 18th Century by John Bedford from the Midlands.   The area has been turned into a country park with former horse drawn tramways and railway lines now providing routes to walk around the area.   Part of today's walk follows National Cycle Path 4 (The Celtic Trail).

Head west out of the upper car park (the lower car park is to the right as you drive in) and immediately turn right through a metal barrier onto a wood land path.   Take care, as further along, the wooden steps are in need of repair.   The path runs parallel with the cycle route that you will use on the return journey.   The path opens into a wider area with the cycle path to the left.   Ignore the right descent and go straight on to the second right turn where metal railings indicate that you are above the iron works.

The path descends to the blast furnace and other remains.   Take time to explore the site then leave by the lower gate near the river.   Cross the bridge and continue along this disused railway track until you come to a house that marks the end of the park at Crown Street.   Don't go through the gate but instead turn left to the cycle path.   Turn left again to start the return journey.

This is another disused railway line that has been turned into a path for walkers and cyclists.   Continue along this old track, ignoring a broad path on the left which connects with the other path you were on earlier.   Eventually you come to a children's playground on the left but this appears to be in a state of disrepair.   Another path on the left goes back to the iron works but continue on the cycle path until you almost reach the road. A path to the left then returns to the car park.
