Swansea Ramblers Walk
Swansea Ramblers visit Austria
Day 3: Biberwier chair lift then walk up to top of Höllkopf
07th July 2018
Leader: Guides arranged with holiday company
Day 3 and our second walk in Austria. We awoke to more rain but after a hearty breakfast, we discovered that the rain had stopped. We caught the local bus to Biberwier where we used not one but two chair lifts to ascend so far up the mountain. We then walked up to the top of Höllkopf with its wonderful views of Wankspitze (don't ask!). We were not so lucky with Handshuhspitze (Glove) Mountain which stubbonly remained shrouded in cloud.
The World Cup football was on TV tonight so a number of faster walkers disappeared down the mountain to get back in time for the match. The rest of us descended at a civilised pace then stopped just below the top of the chair lift at the Sunnalm mountain hut where we enjoyed bier and - Apfel-strudel! - Not forgetting the incredible mountain scenery all around us as we ate.
Swansea Ramblers offer a range of walks for most abilities from the long strenuous mountain walks for the experienced walker to the short, easy lowland walks where maybe you'd like to explore walking for the first time with a friendly group of people. If you'd like to try a walk then do come along and find out what all this Swansea Walking in the great outdoors is all about. It won't cost you anything to come along and see if walking is for you. If you get the bug and want to walk or stroll regularly then you can also become a member. Just ask us about the walks and social events we do when you join us for a Swansea Walk.
Swansea Ramblers at the top of Höllkopf
Ehrwald roads still wet from the overnight rain
Crowded onto the public bus to Biberwier
Sonnenspitze hidden in the clouds
Danni, another of our walk facilitators
describes the walk ahead
And we set off for the chair lifts
Mountains still look majestic even behind cloud
Six-seater chair lift
Then followed by a two seater lift
Waiting for everybody to ascend on the lifts
The mechanism of the second chair lift
Here comes Peter and Paul
And off we go to ascend to the top of the 2194m Höllkopf
Alpine cattle grazing the mountain pasture
A constant background noise of cow bells!
Steep up already!
Marienbergsptizen and Grunstein Mountains
Villages are down in the valley
Handshuhspitze remains shrouded in the clouds
Onward and upward!
Yet more up!
But worth it for the views!
And what views!!
Yes! there's even more up!
And more flowers
Plus mountain goats
Viewpoint of the Wankspitze just below the summit of Höllkopf
There is a skree path down but we're not going that way!
Because we're going to the top of Höllkopf
Yay!! We're at the top
With wonderful views
But then it's back down the same way
And the World Cup football fans race on ahead
More Alpine Flowers
The things people choose to take up a mountain!
Rather you than me!
Ehrwald far below
Mountains starting to come out of the mist
The day turned into a pleasant afternoon
Now we could just go down in the chair lift
But there's the Sunnalm Mountain Restaurant!
We had to sit ouside and enjoy the views
Suppose we had to sample the Apfel-strudel!
And this intrepid mountaineer enjoyed himself
Views just keep coming
This was us going up
And this is us going down
Glad we had a head for heights
Even spotted some deer under the trees
