Joan Cunningham testing the new stile erected in 1987 in memory of her late husband, Bob Cunningham.

Bob and Joan Cunningham moved to Swansea on retirement and were founder members of West Glamorgan Ramblers.

Bob was the first Footpaths Officer, and Joan was Secretary from 1983 to 1985.   They absolutely loved walking in the area, and formed lasting friendships with other members in the group.

When Bob died in 1987, a stile was erected in memory of his contribution to gaining greater access to footpaths on the Gower.

Alan Mattingley of Ramblers Head Office came down to dedicate the stile, with many members present for the occasion.   There is a plaque on the stile which is situated between Llanrhidian and Arthur's Stone at GR: SS 493 915.

Joan died in Suffolk in March 2010 aged 92, and a Memorial Celebration of her life was held at the King Arthur hotel in Reynoldston on 1st August 2010.   About 40 friends and family gathered together and enjoyed reminiscing about their adventures and good times with Joan in years gone by.

Due to the passing of the years her friends are now unable to walk very far, but they certainly had some stories to tell !!

Swansea Ramblers was set up in 1981 by a group of enthusiasts who wanted a different walking experience to what was available at the time.

In those days Swansea was part of the Administrative County of West Glamorgan so we adopted the name 'West Glamorgan Ramblers'.

A subsequent change to local authority boundaries created the 'City and County of Swansea' but we carried on with the old name until October 2010 when it was decided to adopt the more meaningful title of 'Swansea Ramblers'.

You are always more than welcome to come on our walks and see if Swansea Ramblers is for you.   We'll look forward to meeting you on our walks.
